There Is Something Scarier Than Running Out of Candy on Halloween

As kids, we all live in fear of the monster growling under the bed.  But for thousands of kids in Washington, that growl isn’t nearly as loud and scary as the persistent growl of an empty belly.

Since 2014, Backpack Brigade has been on a mission to END weekend hunger for King County kids, but it’s getting TRICKIER (see what we did there?) for us to feed those kids these days.  The rising cost of food has raised our costs by 50 cents per bag, and it now costs us $7.50 to feed one kid for one weekend.  On top of that, the high cost of food and housing has put a lot of pressure on families, and we’ve seen requests for bags increase significantly over the last two years.  In fact, in the last week of September 2024 we fed more than 4,600 kids – a new record.

With higher food prices and more demand, we need your help urgently.  The Annual Halloween Giving Campaign is running from October 1st to October 31st this year, and we’re asking you for a big TREAT this year.

Your gift of $30 or more will feed a minimum of four kids for one weekend.  Feeling extra generous?  A gift of $100 will feed 13 kids.  This month, our goal is to fill 5,000 bags to feed 5,000 students at the 102 area schools we serve.  All the money we raise this month goes directly to buying food to fill empty bellies, so you know you are making a real, immediate difference in the lives of students and families in your own community.

It’s terrifying to run out of candy on Halloween, but it’s a nightmare to run out of food entirely.  Don’t let that happen to King County’s kids – help us fill their backpacks with enough quality, nutritious food to keep them healthy and thriving over the weekend, not only this spooky season, but all year long.
