Childhood Hunger in King County

Most of us look forward to the weekend, but for thousands of children and young adults across King County, they have to navigate uncertainty: will I eat this weekend?
The free breakfast and lunch these kids get at school are sometimes their only real meals during the week. After lunch on Friday, they go hungry until Monday. It’s hard to grasp the reality of spending weekends hungry. Headaches. No energy. Anxiety.

This is weekend hunger.

In King County, 36% kids quality for free and reduced lunch and nearly 8,000 kids experience homelessness.

Where We Serve

Backpack Brigade partners with local communities to provide weekend hunger bags to school kids in need. Each bag contains three breakfasts, three lunches, three dinners, and three snacks, helping students access reliable meals when school is out.

Every week, our dedicated volunteers, school partners, and distributors help us reach more than 5,300 students across 100+ schools in King County.

We have the infrastructure, community support, and determination to keep growing. But reaching every child who needs us requires sustained funding and strong partnerships.

Our goal is simple: end weekend hunger in King County, one student and one weekend at a time.
