A Weekend with Backpack Brigade

What a weekend to be a friend of Backpack Brigade.

On Saturday, May 30th, almost 400 people showed up for the second annual Run to END Weekend Hunger 5K, raising more than $20,000 – enough to provide weekend hunger bags for over 2,000 food-insecure students across King County. Just a few miles away, the Bite of Greece Seattle festival brought the community together through food, fun, culture, and generosity!

We are deeply honored to receive a $10,000 donation from the organizers and supporters e behind Bite of Greece Seattle — a contribution that will provide weekend meals for over 1,300 students. This is what community looks like: neighbors showing up in different ways, united by a shared commitment that no child should go hungry over the weekend.

But the need doesn't stop. In King County, over 20,000 kids face hunger over the weekend — and the 5,300 students who rely on Backpack Brigade meals are feeling the same rising costs at the grocery store that the rest of us are. Many families we serve choose between food and essentials. The reality is that more families than ever are making hard calls to get through the week. Looking at our 2026 Impact Map, it's clear that this is a widespread struggle that touches every corner of our community.

This annual 5K — and the generosity of partners like Bite of Greece Seattle — is a reminder that King County is ready to meet that challenge. When we show up together, we're reminded that the true wealth of our city isn't its incredible views or long summer days. It's the people who make up this community.
