This week Donald Trump was sworn in for another term as President, and with the new administration comes a great deal of uncertainty for the non-profit sector in particular. A slew of executive orders signed on Day 1 have potential reverberations for non-profits around the country. We anticipate that H.R. 7024, the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 will not be revived, and expect significant cuts to government spending for families and children in particular.Â
At Backpack Brigade, we continue to focus on our mission: to END weekend hunger for homeless and food insecure kids in King County. While we are fortunate to have a supportive and engaged community donating generously to purchase food to fill our weekend hunger bags, we rely heavily on grants from government (such as community grants and city contracts) to fund our operations costs. With the stream of federal revenue to these organizations potentially diminishing significantly in the coming year, we are turning once again to our donor community to help.Â
The good news for non-profits is that the incoming administration leans heavily toward tax deductions for both corporations and individuals. With less income obligated to taxes, both corporations and individuals may find themselves with deeper pockets to support community initiatives and better able to exercise strategic giving as an additional tax strategy.Â

Backpack Brigade is well-positioned to work with donors looking to maximize their philanthropic goals over the next four years.Â
Corporate Giving and Sponsorships: We have worked with partners such as the Seattle Mariners, the Seattle Kraken, Starbucks, Home Street Bank, Key Bank, and Amazon to support and promote the social responsibility goals of each organization. From volunteer opportunities to special grants, we understand the ways in which local businesses want to become more involved in the health and development of their communities.
Donor-advised Funds (DAF): The donor-advised fund is a powerful tool for individuals with charitable giving goals. With both short term tax deductions and long-term estate planning impacts, a DAF is a perfect choice for many potential philanthropists. If you have a DAF or are considering establishing one in the near future, please consider naming Backpack Brigade for your distributions.
Stocks: The past year has seen the stock market boom, and though we can never be sure what the future will bring, the new administration’s bullish position on corporate tax cuts is a positive sign for earnings in the near term. If you find yourself with stock to sell and would like to consider leveraging it as part of your tax strategy through charitable giving, Backpack Brigade is able to accept these gifts.
As you consider making a gift to us, remember that many of the children we serve may be negatively impacted by the new administration’s policies. We anticipate a much greater need as federal funding for many programs is withdrawn, and we ask you, now more than ever, to consider the impact long-term hunger has on a community. For those that love Seattle and wish to see its children thrive, we ask for your support.
