Welcome to the new Backpack Brigade Blog! Every Wednesday we will post news, events, ideas, and insights focusing on our ongoing mission to END weekend hunger for homeless and food insecure kids in King County, Washington.
We chose today – Wednesday, September 4, 2024 – for our inaugural post because today we celebrate the start of the 2024-2025 school year! To all the kids heading back to school today (and to all the parents who are so relieved summer vacation is finally over!) we send you all the good vibes for a smart, happy, and successful school year. Whether it’s your first year, your last year, or what feels like your forever-th year, we hope it’s a good one. Learn a lot, make friends, have fun!
For us here at Backpack Brigade, the start of the school year is an exciting time, too. We have new volunteers joining us to prepare racks of food, pack bags for the kids, and drive them to the schools for distribution. We have many corporate volunteer groups joining us too, and we welcome back old friends from Starbucks, Amazon, and The Seattle Mariners, among others.
We also have a new team! Welcome to Sam Hoyt (Program Manager), Sandy Gelb (Administrative Assistant), Kelly O’Shea (Social Media and Brand Manager), and Duncan Rowe (Volunteer Coordinator), who joined Nichelle and Katrina over the summer and have been hard at work fundraising, coordinating volunteers, organizing the warehouse, and getting us all ready to start deliveries later this month. We’ve seen some changes on the Board of Directors, too; said goodbye to a few and welcomed new members. We’ll be profiling our Board on the blog, so watch this space to meet them all.
We’ve filled our calendar with exciting events and activities, so make sure you’re following us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok), subscribe to this blog, bookmark our events page, and mark your calendars so you don’t miss a thing. It’s going to be quite a year!
Welcome to you all, thank you for joining us, and feel free to engage with us in comments if you have thoughts, suggestions, or feedback on the work we do. We are always so happy to talk to our community – because community is what it’s all about. Together, we can END weekend hunger. Together, we can make a difference.
