2025 Annual Report: Fighting Childhood Hunger in Washington

As a Washington nonprofit dedicated to ending weekend hunger, Backpack Brigade saw the need for food assistance continue to grow throughout 2025. Educators across King County reached out with increasing urgency as more students relied on our weekend hunger program to bridge the need between Friday lunch and Monday breakfast.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, Backpack Brigade was able to meet that moment—reaching more children than ever before and continuing our mission to end childhood food insecurity in King County.

We're excited to share the results of an incredible year and the impact we made together.

What 5,200 Weekend Hunger Bags Really Mean

Every number tells a story.

In 2025, Backpack Brigade delivered 5,200 weekend hunger bags every week to students across 105 schools in five King County school districts. Over the course of the year, that added up to 161,910 weekend hunger bags and more than 1.4 million meals delivered to children experiencing food insecurity.

For thousands of children, these bags mean more than food. They provide reliable weekend meals so students can return to school on Monday nourished, ready to learn, and supported by their community.

A Community-Powered Mission

Backpack Brigade is powered by people who believe every child deserves enough to eat.

In 2025, 244 weekly volunteers dedicated 10,802 hours to packing, loading, and delivering weekend hunger bags. Every Thursday morning, volunteer drivers deliver meals to schools across King County, making Backpack Brigade one of the largest weekend hunger relief organizations in Washington

This work simply wouldn't be possible without our volunteers, donors, school partners, and corporate partners. Every bag packed represents a community coming together to fight childhood hunger and ensure children have access to nutritious food all weekend long.

Looking Ahead

While we're proud of what we accomplished in 2025, our work isn't finished.

Food insecurity remains a growing challenge for families across Washington, and Backpack Brigade is committed to expanding access to weekend meals for children throughout King County. As we look toward 2026 and beyond, we'll continue strengthening our programs, supporting more schools, and ensuring every child has access to nutritious food, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
