Mike's Swim to END Weekend Hunger

“Kids’ weekend hunger is something we can solve. I’m swimming to focus attention on kids’ weekend hunger, and Backpack Brigade’s efforts to alleviate it, because it just seems to me that it is something we as a community can solve together. Americans are very generous when faced with a good cause, and King County is no exception to that generosity. Backpack Brigade first put out a call for help 10 years ago and our King County neighbors have responded over the years. But we’re not ‘there’ yet…and I wanted to help Backpack Brigade in its mission to get ‘there’ and get every hungry kid who needs weekend food what they need to not only survive but thrive.” - Mike Humphreys

On July 24, 2024, open water swimmer and Backpack Brigade volunteer Mike Humphreys will swim the length of Lake Washington. This roughly 19-mile swim, stretching between Renton & Kenmore, is expected to take about 11 hours, give or take. Mike, a veteran swimmer with numerous marathon swims to his credit, and the author of the book In Cold Water, is coming off his 7th unsuccessful attempt at swimming an English Channel solo crossing in 2023. At 61, this swim is a tough one. But Mike's focus on childhood hunger for unhoused kids and his passion for Backpack Brigade as a volunteer for 8 years and counting are his driving motivators to complete this challenging swim.

Mike’s Fundraising Goal to Feed Over 4,500 Children!

The goal is to raise $31,500 by the end of Mike’s swim. $31,500 is the amount needed to feed 4,500+ kids for one weekend, and it is the amount needed to fund our first delivery of weekend hunger bags of the 2024-25 school year in September.
